The Black American Heritage Flag

The flag was designed in the year 1967 by Melvin Charles and Gleason T. Jackson. The motivation to create the flag came about when Charles noticed that every other group of people had a flag to display, but not Black Americans. After the flags creation, the duo would go on to design the flag and later travel the country to promote the new Black American Heritage flag.

The Colors

The color red represents the blood shed by African Americans for freedom and equality in America. The color black represents pride in the heritage of Black Americans. The color gold represents intellect, prosperity, and peace.

The Sword And Leaves

In the center of the flag, there lies a sword surrounded by a fig wreath. The sword is intentionally meant to symbolize pride, and the wreath symbolizes peace, prosperity, and everlasting life.
